A Sauk Village woman confirmed Thursday that her daughter owns the SUV, but she said the daughter had lent the vehicle to her brother since November so he could commute to work.

Hard copy has the #. (Separate on-line story adds missing hard-c info)  Why not give the name?  It would help find the reckless driver.

A little publicity is a dangerous thing, as Erick Erickson explains:

Late yesterday RedState broke a significant story, found in this morning’s Morning Briefing, which points to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nations premier public health organization, making a conscious decision to stop publishing the only federal report on abortion.

To briefly recap, for 40 years the CDC has published the Abortion Surveillance Report. For 40 years that report has appeared in the last November or first December issue of CDCs journal, the Morbidity and Mortality Report Weekly Report. This year it didnt. A RedState tradition has been to use this report for our annual retrospective on abortion. When it didnt appear in November or December or in January we decided to ask why.

That inquiry and its response led to our article yesterday.

The internet is an amazing thing. After weeks of checking and phone calls and emails no report. Then one blog post at RedState later, and suddenly the CDC is falling over themselves to produce something. Funny how that works. Two hours and six minutes after the post went live we had an official response from CDC.

What did Jefferson say, embedded in concrete at the entrance to the Chi Trib Tower on Boul Mich, about the relative importance of free government and a free press? (Help me here, someone.) Believe it, people.

Erickson:

According to the CDC we should move along because there is nothing to see here. Really? Were not so sure. It’s never the action, it’s the cover up.

They would prefer that, would they not?

What Chicago needs most from its first new mayor in 22 years is a clean break with the past.

While all the top contenders to succeed Richard M. Daley are political insiders of one sort or another, Rahm Emanuel is the most independent. He’s a product of Democratic politics but not of the City Hall machine.

Etc., including his being a mean s.o.b. (not quoting Crain’s) who will have to deal with others of his ilk. The public employees’ unions, for instance.

Meanwhile, Gery Chico unfortunately continues to pile up endorsements from those very unions, which is not a good sign.

ARSON AT CHRISTMAS PARTY
We were the target of an arson Friday at our Christmas Party.  . . . .
. . . .  Detectives from the Chicago Bomb and Arson Department informed me that four devices, which appeared to be roadside flares, were taped together and left lit and smoldering in the trash can of the men’s bathroom. On the lid of the toliet seat, written in red, it read:  F#CK THE CHICAGO TEA PARTY

Bomb and arson police have deemed this an arson and are now investigating.  . . . .

Because the devices were left in the bathroom it will be difficult to deduce who is the offender from videos and because nobody was killed or harmed (thankfully), fingerprints will not be processed for anywhere from six months to a year.  However, if an offender is found, they will be charged with a felony.

The Machine tried to shut us down, but we will not be silenced!  Their goal with Friday’s arson is to silence us. WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

Let’s show our Christmas spirit and New Year hopes and raise a pint to FREEDOM!

Somebody threw a bomb

Uh-oh, I had this Tea Party event pencilled in for a while and might have been using this fixture:

Last Friday we held our downtown Christmas Party at Dugan’s Irish Pub [128 S. Halsted, “The only Irish pub in Greektown”].

We had a great crowd and the bar was filled with Christmas cheer until smoke began to fill the entire venue.

At approximately 8 p.m. the Chicago Fire Department were called to the bar to put out what was a very smoke filled bar.

After waiting outside for nearly an hour, we were told that the bar was closed for the night and we were asked to gather our belongings.

There were four small dynamite looking devices found in the men’s bathroom, smoldering in the trash can.

The following evening I received a phone call from Chicago Police Department Bomb and Arson officials.

Written on the lid of one of the toliets were: F*CK THE TEA PARTY.

Not far from Haymarket Square.

I find this of more than passing interest.  It’s Tom Roeser on Chicago mayor.  He dismisses Moseley Braun, naturally, for her “masterly ineptitude for administration.”  She would do to Chicago in one term what Coleman Young did to Detroit in 20 years.  (Make it 19.)

Roeser continues:

The only two I have any faith in are Rahm Emanuel and Gery Chico…but Chico is malleable and can easily be rolled by the Gray Wolves of the Council.

This be Chicago-dom.  The great Scylla and Charybdis of city politics: rapacious aldermen vs. powerful mayor running weak-mayor governmental form.  Roeser buys the second and says (at this point) he prefers Emanuel:

Rahm is so duplicitous and mean I think he’ll perceive it’s in his own interest not to let Chicago go the way of Detroit.

Point being, you don’t have to like the guy, you just have to respect his ability to save the city.

But a Star-Ledger review of the archbishops record since 2002 shows Myers on at least four occasions has shielded priests accused of sexual abuse against minors and one adult. In the four instances, the priests have either admitted improper sexual contact, pleaded guilty to crimes stemming from accusations of sexual misconduct or been permanently barred from ministry by the archdiocese after allegations of sexual misconduct.

The archdiocese also wrote a letter of recommendation for one of the priests, a week after it learned he was accused of breaking into a womans home in Florida and possibly assaulting her.

It’s a matter of taking “a cautious hand in publicly naming priests” and feeling the weight of the issue. On the other hand, he

has failed to live up to the guidelines and spirit of what was set forth in Dallas [in 2002, where he was an advocate of sterner
measures]. The most controversial example is the Rev. Michael Fugee, who confessed to police eight years ago that he molested a 13-year-old boy. Fugee was never ousted from the priesthood, and the archdiocese assigned him last year as chaplain to St. Michaels Hospital in Newark without telling hospital officials of his past.

It’s the bishop’s problem in this matter. They can’t pull triggers.
